The Nautilocalyx!

I'm very excited to welcome a new contributor to the blog today! Jude not only grows beautiful African violets but has an extensive collection of very interesting, gorgeously grown gesneriads! She's agreed, from time to time, to share some of the lesser known and quite fascinating gesneriads and their culture with us! Enjoy!


I've become interested in the gesneriad Nautilocalyx over the past year. My first one was Nautilocalyx pemphidius, well actually it was my third. The first and second I accidentally allowed to dry out. Never, ever allow a Nautilocalyx to dry out. They die immediately, they don't even say good bye, they just leave! Nautilocalyx pemphidius, affectionately called "Naughty Little Pimp", is a small growing plant. At present, mine is seven inches high by seven inches wide. It grows by sending out side shoots and I expect it will soon fill out the twelve inch shallow bowl that it's planted in. The Plant was growing in a very porous medium. I took it out of it's pot and placed it in the domed bowl and filled in around it with long fibered sphagnum moss which I keep damp at all times. The plant has small, pebbled, strappy leaves in a bronzy green. It blooms easily and quite heavily but the flowers are very small. They look like little white stars against the dark foliage.

My next variety was Nautilocalyx forgettii. This is a larger growing plant with pebbly emerald green leaves with a red center and fuzzy red stems. I'm told that it will have small yellow flowers but I would grow it just for the lovely foliage. This plant is also growing in a very porous medium. I propagated it from cuttings that Bill Price was giving away at the '06 AVSA Convention. I asked if I should plant the whole cutting or take off leaves to plant. He said "Do both" so I did. Every piece grew. This one is growing in a large plastic open topped box to give it plenty of humidity.

I have now started seeds of Nautilocalyx Burle Marx and I have no idea what this one will look like. But I do know not to let it dry out.

I'm told that these plants may or may not form tubers. So far I have not found any in the pemphidius but the forgettii seems to be producing tubers. With tubers I always feel that I have a second chance if something goes wrong.

"Secrets"

"Pssssst, have I got something for you!" Here are a couple of tips that will make your life easier and your plants prettier! I'd like to thank Sharon J. for sharing this article with us!!!
Ah, yes, we all have secrets. What prompted my writing about secrets is that at our last local club meeting Barb told us a few things that she does with her plants.

Use straws to move the leaves into position.

Lift the leaves rather than a bloom stalk to raise it above the foliage because bloom stalks break off easier than leaves.

Mark the pots with different colored labels so that you know when they need to be replanted rather than having to look for a date written on the label.

Use Yard Glove on your hands to act a a "glove" before working with a lot of soil. Use it under your finger nails too.

Use cheap acrylic blankets as "mats" for mat watering. Wash them several times to remove sizing and cut them to fit the trays.

Here are some of the things that I like to do and use:

Use beverage straws to make which plants are for sale. It's a constant reminder of which ones I want to sell.

Use old pantyhose to tie up plants. I bring the string around the back of the stake, then to the front and cross over to the plant. Bring the string around the back of the plant and cross over again before going to the back of the stake where it is tied in a know. It forms a "T" between the stake and the plant. I do this in the garden too. The plant never rests on the stake that way.

Use hairpins to hold down suckers when they are removed from the parent plant. It helps to get it rooted. And yes, they are still available in the stores.

I use many thing to clean my hands including denture cleaners, make-up remover and lemon juice.

Use landscape fabric on the top of the blanket mating. Put the "hole" side down on the fabric and be sure to cut it a tiny bit larger than the mat. It prevents algae from forming on the mat. When it gets dirty, just throw it in the washer. This was a suggestion in the AVM by Bill Pawee.

These are just some of the secrets that we have. They are now no longer "secrets" but simple things that we can do to make growing easier. Do you have any "secrets" to share??? Leave them in the comment section!

Japanese Chimeras

We've got something special for the post today! Dale Martens has sent a wonderful article about the newest thing in African violets, the chimeras from Japan! Dale says:

"I've attached 4 photos of the Japanese African violet Chimera 'Yukako'. See the pretty purple and green chimera flowers in the first photo. I decided to hybridize with the plant, so I made some crosses although green flowers are notoriously difficult to breed! A few weeks later I decided I wanted to propagate it, so I removed the center.

Within a month I got new growth which you can see in the next photo. Well, I went on a 3 week trip to Australia and New Zealand and upon returning we found ourselves being very attentive for the next two months to a relative who was quite sick. So I didn't have a chance to remove the growing center of 'Yukako'.

See the next photo with an abundant amount of sucker growth! Finally I got around to removing all the suckers.

About the seed pods: so far 2 had seeds and 7 did not have a single seed even though the fat pods took 5-1/2 months to ripen. Seeds sown 2 weeks ago haven't sprouted yet. I'm not surprised because this same sort of thing happened when I crossed the green/white chimera 'Emerald City' with 'Louisiana Lagniappe'. Happily with that cross I was able to get a few seeds that gave me my two newly introduced 'Heartland' African violets." - Dale Martens in Illinois.

The "Boys in Pink" Experience the Snow!

What are you going to do now that you're probably stuck at home because of the largest snow event in 25 years? The "Boys in Pink" would like to share some suggestions with everyone. First, they say that to keep up your strength you should think about some chocolate.... coco, some Hershey's .... Secondly, remember to stay warm. A flight south is always a good idea... And thirdly, take some time with your violets and gesneriads!!! What a wonderful day to catch up on the grooming and watering. Maybe change those liners to the reservoirs, wash the capillary matting and check everything over for any signs of insects or powdery mildew!!!

Propagation with Leaves!

Recently on the gesneriphile list there have been some very, very interesting posts about propagation of various gesneriads using only leaves. Not the stems or part of a tuber or rhizome, but just the leaf portion of things. One of the regular and very knowledgeable contributors to the gesneriphile list at... gesneriphiles@lists.ibiblio.org wrote something that was so excellent it had to be shared! Jon Dixon wrote:
Some gesneriads propagate better from leaves than others. Many of the plants we regularly prop from leaves are old world--such as streps, chiritas, AV's, and petrocosmeas. Even aeschynanthus will propagate from leaves. With the latter, leaves are much more difficult and slower than cuttings, but will work. Some years ago I did a few experiments and concluded that aeschynanthus leaves root and sprout best when grown in a favorable media, enclosed, under lights, and fed. I have used perlite/vermiculite or long fiber sphagnum moss. When leaves are grown under less ideal conditions, such as out in the open, the rooted leaves often sit for a year or more before decaying. Often, in these kinds of nutrient poor media, the leaves will sit if not lightly fertilized. The same rules seem to apply to other gesneriad leaves that are more difficult, such as episcias.

Once I had very good luck getting sprouts when I rooted the small leaves of Aeschynanthus lanceolatus in P/V laid down about an inch thick in a sweater box and under lights. The size of the container provided just the right degree of high humidity without dripping condensation. The same methodology also produced the best sprouting from 2" long strep leaf wedges.

Many of our new world gesneriads will not root from leaves, or only rarely, such as columnea, nematanthus, and codonanthe. But, nautilocalyx propagate readily from leaves. This genus is closely related to episcia, yet episcias sprout poorly from leaves while nautilocalyx sprout fairly quickly. a third related genus, paradrymonia also root well from leaves, but alsobia has been a total failure. Gasteranthus will also grow well from leaves.

Sinningias are a mixed bag. Some propagate from leaves and others do not. Sometimes, on the same species, new young leaves will root, but older leaves taken after the stem has flowered will not. Once I used my above method on a large sinn. leaf from a species that had already flowered--I am not sure; but, I think it was iarae. I enclosed the large leaf in a large ziplock bag over a pot and put it at the back of my light stand. About a year later I decided to open the bag and see how things were going. The leaf was still healthy, but there were no signs of roots. So, I tossed it--a year is long enough to make roots, I think. Previously I had once taken a leaf from a large growing S. reitzii hybrid. It also sat enclosed in its ziplock wonderland for over a year before I ventured a peek. What I found was the healthy leaf connected to a cube shaped tuber that filled the 2" pot. There was no sign of a sprout, but I potted it up, fed it, and was rewarded with growth.

Of all the sinningia species, speciosa is the propagating fool. You can get new plants from just about any part of the plant--stem, tuber, seed, leaf, and pedicel. The latter was demonstrated by someone here on gesneriphiles. I never had luck, but didn't give my cuttings all of the above conditions. It was reported that fresh pedicels from corollas that had just withered but were not pollinated, cut at the base (but with no stem or bud tissue) and with the fleshy calyx lobes, rooted and produced tubers. I think the attached calyx lobes acted like succulent leaves, enabling rooting. Many of us remember the work that Marty Mines did in the 80's, propagating mini sinningias from tissue culture. He demonstrated that this was a preferable method for mass production of named hybrids that did not come true from seed. I can't remember if he used cut sections of pedicels or leaves.

Another friend of mine, a succulent grower, demonstrated that tissue culture can be done without especially sterile conditions. He propagated haworthias using sterile media but did not need a glove box or a flow hood. He did all his prep work at a desk, with an aquarium sitting on its side, using spray bottles of bleach or alcohol to spray down everything. He had the same percentage of contamination as those doing the same work under a hood (less than 25%, mol). His method was written up in an issue of the Cactus and Succulent journal sometime in the mid 90's, mol.

Patrick Worley used to regularly propagate his new rhizomatous hybrids from leaves. He seemed to have great success using just leaves. Sometimes they produced rhizomes and sometimes they sprouted new shoots. A terminal leaf cutting taken when the plant is getting ready to flower and cut with a bit of the stem and bud may produce flowers before anything else. He also mass produced his new hybrids by breaking up rhizomes into individual scales and then sowing them like seeds on sterile media, enclosed and under lights. I believe he used sweater boxes.

With any propagation, the time of year is important. For example, I have been able to root stem cuttings of columneas or episcias in water during summer time, but have had no luck in winter. Both times the cuttings were in vases of water on bright windowsills.

Regarding streptocarpella, which Gene was unsuccessful with--many years ago a late member of the SF Gesneriad society, Chet Nave, brought in sprouted leaves of 'Concord Blue', that were done in a small pot of P/V enclosed in a plastic bag in his greenhouse. I suspect that he did this in the warm season, although living near the ocean in Pacifica, there is really no warm season. Reminded of Chet's success and knowing that aeschynanthus leaves root, I did an experiment with closely related Lysionotis pauciflorus leaves. I had no success but need to try this experiment again, making sure that I give the cuttings ideal conditions, and doing it in summer.

I am sure experimentation will yield some surprising discoveries that while not necessarily productive are nevertheless educational.

Another Fairy "Tail"

Once upon a time, there was a tiny cat that was getting "cabin fever". He was, of course, the master of all he surveyed. He had conquered the fierce beasts that tried to invade his kingdom, he had made his people proud. But now, well... he was bored.

He went to his computer (because he was a techno-savvy cat) and he thought he'd instant message a few of his friends. One was out of town on a trip and another was doing taxes. A couple of his friends were even at Disney World (because they heard about the "mice" that lived there.) So just as he was about to give up on finding a diversion he saw that he had an email.


The tiny cat was excited because his email was from his friend and mentor from the next kingdom over. It was from Miss Tilly. She said that she had urgent business to attend to far away from her kingdom and she wondered if there was anyone that was strong and brave and fearless to come to her kingdom and watch over it while she was gone.



Well.... strong, brave and fearless??? The tiny cat knew exactly who that sounded like and he said that he would journey right over. He came to the massive gates and entered the tidy kingdom. When Miss Tilly greeted him at the castle she said that all he had to do was simply sit. (Miss Tilly really didn't like anything to "move her cheese" and she valued order above most everything else.) She knew the tiny cat had problems with curiosity, but after they talked he had solemnly agreed to simply sit at the castle and take a nap. Just his presence was enough to keep the order which Miss Tilly so valued.


Everything was going along well until the tiny cat heard a noise. He knew he wasn't supposed to do anything about it, but curiosity got the best of him. He went to the gardens and walked amongst (and on) the plants there.



He saw something hanging down from the ceiling that looked like giant striped spiders and he got worried that they were about to sneak up on someone in the kingdom. He taught it a good lesson and it was never to rise off the floor again.







He heard a mechanical whir and the tiny cat went to the computers and stuck stuff down into the whirring machine to silence it! It was finally quiet.








He then saw a menacing foe on the ground and flung himself onto it. He kicked and bit and finally it was still..... he chewed on it's whiteness for a while till he fell asleep. "Whew," said the tiny cat. "That was a close call".

When Miss Tilly came back she gazed about her now less than tidy kingdom. She just sighed. Finding the gardens stepped on, the floors an unrecognizable jumble and the computers jammed she knew that the old saying was only too true.... When the mice are away, the cat WILL play!

Share Your Favorite Tips



How do you control your "wilder" growing plants? What do you do to keep everything growing evenly and your violets symmetric? Let's hear from folks about what you do to make the plants you grow look their best!

My favorite recycle-tip is using chopsticks to stake up stems. They come in just about the perfect size for those things that grow under lights, things like kohleria and sinningias. The wood's been made smooth and you don't get splinters or the artificial color rubbing off on your hands like you can have happen with the colored green bamboo pieces. The sticks are tapered for easy insertion in the soil with little root disruption and they are fairly strong and won't bend over like a soda straw.

Imidacloprid

There's been an interesting discussion on the gesneriphile list talking about the use of Marathon systemic granules for insect eradication with regards to people's collections of gesneriads and African violets. Certain insects are very hard to control and this particular chemical has sparked some interest because it seems quite effective. Here's a little information about this chemical, Imidacloprid.

Imidacloprid is a systemic, chloro-nicotinyl insecticide with soil, seed and foliar uses for the control of sucking insects including rice hoppers, aphids, thrips, whiteflies, termites, turf insects, soil insects and some beetles. Imidacloprid is found in a variety of commercial insecticides. The products Admire, Condifor, Gaucho, Premier, Premise, Provado, and Marathon all contain imidacloprid as the active ingredient (223). Posts from the gesneriphile list have been discussing ways to control mealy and soil mealy bugs. One person, Irina Nicholson was saying, "I join the Marathon afficionadoes. I got a half gallon of it - seems it is a smallest container you can get, paid about $100 for it - but it will last for a long time. I add a half tablespoon per a gallon of soil when repot - and it works for 3-4 months. I had a root mealy bugs infestation in 2004 - and it was the only thing to get rid of them. It keeps off any kind of mealy bugs, fungus gnats and thrips - in their soil and leaf eating stage, it doesn't help against thrips in the buds, though, so if they fly in in summer - I need to disbud everything."

Mel Grice on the gesneriphiles@lists.ibiblio.org said "Bayer Advanced Tree & Shrub insect control comes in a 32 oz. blue plastic bottle and contains the same concentration of Imidacloprid as found in Marathon granules. It is a milky white liquid that I mix with water in a watering can and use as a soil drench. A couple of applications a few days apart seemed to solve my mealy bug problems. It doesn't seem to smell and is a lot easier than spraying everything. You can purchase it at Lowe's, Home Depot and places like that. The 32 oz. bottle costs about $20.00 the last time I looked.


Another reader from the list asked about the dilution and application rates. Mel answered
, I use ¼ tsp. of the Bayer Tree & Shrub / Imidacloprid in a 1 gallon watering can. It is a systemic insecticide so you want to water the plant when it is slightly on the dry side so that the plant absorbs as much of the solution as possible. I don't like to get out the measuring spoon all the time because I usually spill some of the Bayer. I use a funnel to fill plastic squeeze bottles like you see below with the Bayer T&S. The empty bottles can be purchased at craft, hobby, art stores, etc. in various sizes. They usually have a separate cap and you have to cut off the tip. You get a small hole if you cut it off at the top and a progressively larger hole the farther down you go. I get 20 drops in a ¼ tsp. measuring spoon. You should measure how many drops fit in your spoon the first time you try it."

Usually people have been getting the granular form of imidacloprid under the trade name of Marathon. Many times it seems hard to purchase and expensive for the amount you get. This is perhaps an alternative. I am not endorsing this product or telling you that it's safe for either you or your plants. I'm more of an organic gardener with over 15 years of completely NO chemicals in my vegetable beds and only rare use of systemic fungicides on my heritage peonies that came from my grandmother. (I couldn't bear to lose them.) But, for those interested in a chemical that others have found useful, this might be of some interest. The link and many more like it will provide lots of useable information so that you can make an educated choice of what sorts of chemicals you're exposing yourself to. Here Come the Russians!!!

I became interested in the violets from Russia when I heard Vladimir Kalgin gave a presentation at the AVSA National convention in Tucson AZ. He showed pictures of people selling violets outside on benches by a street. It looked like there was snow on the ground. Everyone was wearing heavy coats and hats. He also showed pictures of meetings inside houses and some were wearing jackets and everyone was wearing heavy sweaters! The rooms were obviously cold. Vladimir brought a whole bunch of leaves to the convention, which were sold at the auction. It was real exciting that he was so generous to bring us their hybridized leaves and give us an opportunity to grow their plants.

The plants looked lovely in the pictures but they must be very hardy to survive in such an environment. How can those plants survive in cool temperatures since we have been told the ideal temperatures are 65 to 75 degrees? Can we grow them in our warm houses? Would they be better, or would they be so acclimated to a cooler environment that they would not grow well in our warmth? I do not know any of the answers, but I went ahead and bought some of the plants when they became available just to see how they grew. I have a beautiful one right now that is 21” in diameter with beautiful symmetry, and beautiful flowers. I am impressed!

At the MN convention I encountered a lady that was originally from Russia, now living in Florida, and she kindly sent me some leaves. I am now starting to grow them and I am quite pleased with the foliage and the flowers. I will be selling some of the babies at our show at Northtown, March 30, 31st. Collection to receive $ 300 at National conventions. Hmm…sorta makes me want to grow them! Time will really tell how they do in our warm houses but right now I have well over 100 babies and I cannot see any difference from the Russian violets from any others that I have and I am truly excited watching them grow, hopefully, into a REAL WINNER!
